Here at Nightingale’s List, we are proud to be Southern California’s Top Rated Local® nurse staffing agency. We match nurses, CNAs, medical assistants, and psychiatric technicians with contract jobs all throughout SoCal including Los Angeles, San Quentin, Chino, Bakersfield, Stockton, San Diego, and many other places. We offer temporary, permanent, and travel contracts to help nurses and employers find the right fit. For our non-local applicants, one of the most common questions we get is “why should I accept an assignment in Southern California?” Because we are local, we can’t fathom why anyone wouldn’t want to come and work in SoCal, but we took a step back and compiled a list of our top reasons why you should.
The weather is always optimal.
Southern California is known for having some of the most beautiful weather all year round. There is no digging your car out of the snow and we get to enjoy the beaches without the constant threat of hurricanes. The humidity is mild compared to the East Coast, and the sun shines most days of the year. Shorts, flip flops, and light jackets are all you need. Of course, don’t forget to pack your scrubs and sunglasses.
Live like a local, travel like a tourist.
Here in California, we are lucky to have all the things that people from other states travel to see. We are home to some of the most beautiful beaches and the Pacific Ocean is prime surf territory. Even when the weather makes it a little too cool to swim, we are home to wildlife that draws crowds to the beaches year-round. Southern California is home to many popular travel destinations including national parks such as Yosemite, Joshua Tree, and Death Valley. For entertainment, we are home to Disneyland and California Adventures. Are you a vino connoisseur or a serious runner? California is your motherland, full of vineyards and home to some of the most popular races in the nation. You can work your shifts each week and spend your downtime soaking in everything that California has to offer.
Prime employment.
California has some of the most employee-friendly employment laws and unemployment is much lower than the national average. For nurses specifically, California registered nurses (RN) earn a better income in California than in any other state, with the average nursing income being $102,000.00 annually. Additionally, the California Board of Nursing is anticipating nearly 21,000 new nursing positions over the next year. Because there are currently more than 320,000 nurses actively practicing in California, there is little to no required overtime and a normal full-time pay period ranges from 32 to 36 hours weekly. This offers California nurses a better income and work-life balance.
Other honorable mentions include:
- All the tacos you can eat
- The freshest produce in the United States
- Ski and surf — in the same week!
- Music festivals galore
- Ranked #1 nationwide for income compared to cost-of-living
- State-wide hospital rating by nurses was 91% in 2019
- (the ONLY) State mandates cap nurse-to-patient ratio at 1:5, much lower than the national average
